Labour disputes flocks HURIA’s Mombasa Legal Aid Center

Labour related disputes were the most registered complaints at the Human Rights Agenda (HURIA) Legal Aid Centre in Mombasa. According to HURIA’s Legal Associate Emmanuel Mang’era who has been receiving cases and public complaints at the desk, there has been an increase in conflicts between employers and employees, most of the disputes revolving around illegal termination, breaching of contracts and unfulfilled compensation promises.

HURIA signed novel framework of partnership with the Kwale County Assembly to enhance Inclusive Governance and Accountability in Kwale County. The signing ceremony was hosted by the Assembly Speaker alongside the House Leadership Committee and senior technical staff.

Accelerating State and Private Sector Measures to Eradicate Modern Slavery at the Coast of Kenya

Article 30 of our Kenyan constitution seriously abhors slavery in all its forms. However, slavery in its contemporary forms has permeated different sectors of the Kenyan economy. According to the 2023 Global Slavery Index, an estimated 239,000 + Kenyans are victims of Modern Slavery mostly in the agricultural, mining, tourism, and construction industries. Governments and non-state actors are implored under the SDGs to take immediate and effective measures to eradicate modern slavery in all its forms by 2025. While significant efforts have already been made, more strategic partnerships and concerted efforts are required to pool resources to scale up successful interventions.

Grassroots leadership accountability forums empower Kwale communities

The ongoing grassroots leadership accountability and engagement forums in Kwale County, located in the Coastal region of Kenya, have proven to be an effective tool in bridging the gap between communities and their political leaders. This program, known as Kiongozi Maskani (Leaders at the grassroots level), is spearheaded by the human rights organization, Human Rights Agenda (HURIA). Its primary focus is to bring together political leaders and local residents at the grassroots level to deliberate, discuss, and engage with each other. The ultimate goal is to find amicable solutions to the various challenges faced by the local population throughout Kwale County.
